New Construction Gutters in Austin, TX

New construction gutters in Austin go best when downspouts are planned before flatwork and the gutters go on after the roof and fascia are finished. We work with home builders and roofing companies on full-house systems, roll-formed on site. You get a written line-item quote for the job file.

This page is written for builders, superintendents and roofers. The gutter is a small line on your budget, and a downspout landing in the wrong place is an easy way to earn a callback. So the useful conversation happens early, while grade and concrete can still change.

What does a builder own on new construction gutters in Austin?

Three obligations come with the roof. Check each against the jurisdiction you are permitted in, because Austin's rules do not travel to the next city.

  • Roof water on expansive soil. International Residential Code R801.3 calls for a controlled method of roof water disposal where expansive or collapsible soils are known to exist, discharging at least 5 feet from foundation walls or to an approved drainage system. The City of Austin lists the 2024 IRC with local amendments, effective July 10, 2025.
  • Lot grade. R401.3 asks for grade that falls at least 6 inches in the first 10 feet. A downspout cannot rescue a lot that drains back toward the slab.
  • Local design rules. HOAs and deed restrictions may control color or profile. Ask before you order. We will not guess at a local rule.

Does Austin's WUI code change the gutter spec?

It can, inside Austin only. Austin's Wildland-Urban Interface code, WUI for short, covers construction near wildland. The 2024 edition applies to projects starting on or after July 10, 2025, and projects from January 1, 2021 through July 9, 2025 fall under the 2015 code. It covers Austin's full and limited purpose areas, not properties wholly in the ETJ.

Austin's guide lists noncombustible gutters and downspouts with leaf guards in Zones A, B and C. Vinyl guards typically do not qualify; metal mesh does. Pull the zone from the Interactive WUI Code Map before you lock the gutter line, or write to wuicodeinfo@austintexas.gov. See gutter guards for how we talk through options. Other cities are outside this rule, so check local requirements there.

When should gutters go on during a build?

  1. At plan stage, flag valleys, long eaves and outdoor living areas that drain onto patios.
  2. Before flatwork, agree on discharge points so sleeves or lines can go in under drives and walks if the design needs them.
  3. After roof and fascia, we measure the finished roofline. Plan dimensions drift, and field measurement is what we roll-form to.
  4. After exterior paint where possible, so nobody touches up around hangers or scuffs a finished gutter.
  5. Before final grade and landscape, set extensions and splash pads so the landscaper works around known water paths.

Give us a call when you have a realistic roof date. We will tell you straight what the schedule allows.

Where new builds go wrong around here

Most gutter callbacks on a new home start with sequence, not metal. Concrete goes in before anyone picks discharge points, and a corner with a drive on one side and a walk on the other has no good ending. A landscaper buries an extension or regrades around it. A short run gets one outlet because the budget said one, and a valley overloads it in the first hard rain.

Clay raises the stakes. East of I-35, Blackland soil swells when wet and shrinks when dry, so one slab corner taking a full roof plane is the condition to design out early. In growth corridors around Manor, Kyle and Leander, many homeowners end up adding gutters after move-in, over finished flatwork. Planned during the build, those outlets land where the lot can take them.

What the gutter line on a new build covers

A full-house line runs from the first talk through the plans to the last extension. We measure the finished roofline, form each run on site in the color from your selection sheet, and hang it with a fall toward the marked outlets. Two things should be true before we arrive: the fascia is secure and the roof edge details are finished. Any paint or wrap that belongs behind the gutter should be done too, or someone ends up pulling a run to finish a wall.

  • Plan review, then field measurement of the finished roofline
  • 5-inch or 6-inch K-style in .027 or .032 aluminum, roll-formed on site
  • Downspouts at the marked locations, with elbows and straps
  • Extensions or splash pads set before final grade
  • Guards where the spec or an Austin WUI zone calls for them
  • A walk of each discharge point with your superintendent

Production homes, custom homes and modern roof lines

The standard spec is 5-inch K-style in .027 aluminum, the minimum we hang, with about one downspout per 30 feet of gutter. The .032 gauge is the heavier option. Big-box stock is often .025 or .019. The Census puts median year built in the Austin area at about 2000, and many of those homes still wear their original builder-grade gutters.

Custom and modern homes change the math. Long eaves, low-slope metal and clean fascia lines may call for 6-inch gutters, 3x4 downspouts or a box profile. We handled full gutters on a new modern home for one home builder, and his review below says how it went. Read the metal roof gutter page for those details, and see downspout installation for discharge options. Box and hidden gutter work is confirmed on the estimate.

What moves a new construction gutter quote?

We have no published price list. The estimate is free, and the quote comes back as line items for the job file. On a new build it moves with measured footage, corners, gauge, gutter size, and the number and size of downspouts. Elevation counts as well, since a two-story wall or a falling lot means longer downspouts and more ladder setup.

Scope decisions add the rest. Metal guards in a WUI zone are their own line. Phasing can change a quote if the job needs one visit to mark outlets before flatwork and another to hang metal. Sleeves under drives and walks usually fall to the concrete crew, so settle who owns them. A repeated floor plan helps with the takeoff, but each lot still has its own grade and its own discharge.

How should you vet a gutter subcontractor in Texas?

Texas has no statewide roofing contractor license, and we found no state gutter license. So the license question will not screen anyone for you. Verify insurance directly, call references from other builders and walk a finished job. Ask who actually hangs the gutter. Here the owner, Victor, handles the job and his son Omar leads installs, and that is who the builder reviews below describe.

Why builders and roofers use V&V

Sarmad B., a home builder, had full gutters put on a new modern home and calls Victor responsive and fair on price, and Omar sharp and meticulous. Daniel S. says the crew has done many jobs for his roofing company and its customers. Rain P. had gutters put on a new house and calls the company professional and very responsive. We will not promise a date ahead of time. Give us a roof date and we will tell you where the schedule stands.

“As a home builder, I had V&V install full gutters on a new modern home. Victor the owner was responsive, easy to work with and gave me a fair price. Common questions

Do new homes in Austin have to have gutters?

Not always in those words. IRC R801.3 calls for controlled roof water disposal where expansive or collapsible soils are known to exist, and gutters with downspouts are the usual way to meet it. How that applies to a given lot and foundation is a question for the building official. Confirm with Development Services or your city before you drop gutters from the budget.

Can a builder send plans for a gutter quote?

Yes. Send the plans or the measurements and we can talk through the gutter line and downspout count. Customers have sent measurements before. We still measure the finished roofline before the coil is cut, because field dimensions drive the job. The quote comes back as written line items for your file.

Do you work directly with roofing companies?

Yes. A roofing company owner reviewed us after we did many gutter jobs for his company and his roofing customers. Call once the roof date is set. Tell us the roof type and color early so the gutter line and panel edge work together.

Should downspout locations be planned before concrete is poured?

Yes, whenever you can. Once drives, walks and patios are poured, a corner that needed to cross them has few good options. Mark the downspouts at plan stage, and decide which ones daylight on grass and which need a sleeve under the slab. On expansive clay, the goal stays 6 to 10 feet from the foundation.

Do homes outside Austin need WUI leaf guards?

Austin's WUI rule does not reach them. It applies inside Austin's full and limited purpose areas, not to properties wholly in the ETJ or to other cities. Those places may have their own rules, so check with the local building office before you finalize the spec. We can quote guards as an option either way.
