A smooth panel has less to slow the water down. The Texas Water Development Board's rainwater manual makes the point from the other direction: the smoother the roof, the more rain you collect. Off a long standing seam plane in an Austin downpour, that water reaches the eave moving fast. A gutter hung the way it would be on shingles can miss part of it.
Gutters for metal roofs in Austin: what changes
- Where water lands. Panel edge, drip edge and gutter have to line up, or water overshoots or slips behind.
- How much arrives at once. Long planes and valleys send a lot of water to one short stretch.
- What the gutter can touch. Hangers go on the fascia. Nothing should need to puncture a panel.
- Which metals sit together. Copper runoff and coated steel panels do not mix.
- What slides off. Ice can leave a metal roof as a sheet during a hard freeze.
What the job includes
We check the panel edge, trim and fascia, then set the run where the water actually lands. A long eave gets one continuous run formed on site. Anything that touches the roof side gets agreed with your roofer first.
- Panel edge, eave trim and apron check
- 5-inch or 6-inch K-style run set under the edge
- Fascia-mounted hangers, with nothing through the panels
- 2x3 or 3x4 outlets planned around valleys and long planes
- Discharge carried 6 to 10 feet off clay
Where should the panel edge land in the gutter?
The edge should finish over the trough, close enough that a light rain does not curl back and far enough that water drops in. Too short and water tracks behind the gutter onto the fascia. Too long and a hard storm carries it past the front lip. There is no single number that fits every roof. Panel profile, pitch and how the roofer finished the eave all change it.
So we look before we quote. We check the eave trim and any gutter apron, the metal flashing that carries water off the roof edge and into the gutter. The back of the gutter should sit behind that flashing, so water cannot get between gutter and fascia. On a new roof, it helps to talk with the roofer before the eave trim goes on.

Signs the gutter and panel are out of line
Watch the next hard rain from the yard. A curtain of water landing past the gutter means overshoot. Wet streaks on the fascia behind the run mean water is slipping behind it. A row of splash marks or a shallow trench in the bed along the wall shows where the roof is really dropping its water.
What gutter size does a metal roof need?
Start with the same arithmetic as any roof, then look hard at the long planes. Our baseline is 1 square inch of downspout for every 100 square feet of roof, with about one downspout per 30 feet of gutter. A 5-inch K-style takes 2x3 or 3x4 downspouts. A 6-inch K-style pairs with 3x4.
The Texas Water Development Board warns that long ridge-to-eave distances, steep slopes and valleys all push gutters to overrun, and that those variables make sizing rules of thumb hard to apply. Metal roofs often stack all three. Austin's normal rainfall is 36.3 inches a year by NOAA's 1991-2020 figures, but the annual total is not what overflows a gutter. Short, heavy bursts are. Compare the 6-inch gutter page before you decide, and remember that one more downspout may solve what a bigger gutter would not.

Standing seam, screw-down and hanger choices
Standing seam and screw-down are the two common residential types. Standing seam panels have raised seams and hidden fasteners. Screw-down panels show their fasteners, and the corrugated or ribbed edge leaves small gaps at the eave. Both need the same rule: hang the gutter from the fascia.
Roof straps that fasten through a panel add a hole to a roof that was built to have few. If your roof has no fascia to hang from, or the fascia needs repair, the job changes. Fascia carpentry gets confirmed on the estimate. If you have a roofing warranty, ask your roofer before anything fastens to the panels.

How we fit a gutter to a metal eave
- Eave check. At the free estimate we measure the run and look at panel edge, trim and fascia.
- Roofer talk. On a new roof, the eave detail gets agreed before the trim goes on.
- Written quote. Size, gauge, color, downspouts and any fascia scope appear line by line.
- Install. The run is roll-formed on site, set under the panel edge and hung from the fascia at a steady fall.
- Walkthrough. After cleanup we check outlets and discharge with you.
Do Austin metal roofs need snow guards?
Usually not for snow. The question here is ice. During the 2023 ice storm, the Texas Tribune reported about three-quarters of an inch of ice in Austin against a forecast of a quarter inch. A sheet of ice like that can release from a smooth panel all at once and hit whatever sits below.
A snow guard is a roof-mounted part, so that decision belongs with your roofer. On the gutter side, set expectations. A gutter is not built to stop a sliding sheet of ice. Keep it tight to the fascia, tucked under the panel edge, and do not treat it as a snow guard alternative. Rare events like that are also a good reason to know who repairs storm-damaged gutters.
Which gutter metals are safe with a metal roof?
Aluminum is the usual match. The Metal Construction Association's dissimilar metal bulletin treats aluminum parts as compatible with aluminum-zinc coated steel panels, and warns that copper runoff is harmful to galvanized and aluminum-zinc coated roofs. So copper above coated steel is the combination to avoid, and that includes a copper flashing or cap draining onto panels.
If you want the copper look, one customer chose a copper color from our range of finishes, and another told us the color matched so closely you could hardly see the gutters. True copper and steel availability is something to ask us when you call. Modern homes sometimes want hidden gutters or a box profile. We describe that work on the estimate and confirm the scope before you commit, since it depends on the roof edge and the framing behind it.

What affects the cost of metal roof gutters?
- Linear feet, stories and how much of the eave is reachable from a ladder.
- Profile and size: 5-inch or 6-inch K-style, half-round or box.
- Gauge: .027 aluminum is the minimum we hang, and .032 is the heavier option.
- Downspout count and size, plus discharge, which on clay means 6 to 10 feet from the foundation.
- Eave trim changes coordinated with your roofer, and any guards.
For rough context, Angi's 2026 Austin guide reports an average seamless gutter job of $1,128 with a typical range of $883 to $1,373, and lists $4 to $10 per linear foot on one page and $5 to $10 on another. A national cost listing shows $7 to $15 per linear foot installed for Austin. Those sources measure different jobs and none is specific to metal roofs. They are not our prices. We publish none, and your written quote sets the number.
Roof details add their own lines. A panel edge that needs rework at the eave, a steep pitch that slows ladder setup, or a valley that calls for another outlet will all show on the quote.
Permits and code around a metal reroof
Inside Austin's jurisdiction, the City's WUI page says a roof replacement of 50 percent or more triggers full replacement, and its guide lists noncombustible gutters and downspouts with leaf guards in Zones A, B and C. Other cities and properties wholly in the ETJ sit outside that rule. Austin's Work Exempt from Building Permits list names wood fascia, trim and soffits but not gutters, so confirm with Development Services. Texas has no statewide roofing contractor license, and no state gutter license was found, so ask both trades for insurance details and references.
Why roofers and homeowners call V&V
- We roll-form on site, so a long eave gets one continuous run with seams only at corners and end caps.
- A roofing company owner has had us do many jobs for his company and his customers.
- You can pick from many colors, which matters when the panel color is the main event.
- Victor quotes the job and Omar leads the install, and customers say they explain the work.
Daniel S. says we have done many gutter jobs for his roofing company and its customers, which is the closest fit here. No review describes a metal roof by name, so we will show you the plan for your eave at the free estimate.
“Victor and his crew have done many gutter jobs for my roofing company Accent Roofing and Remodeling and for my roofing customers. All custmers fompletely satisfied. Excellent quality and pricing..strongly recommend his sevice.”
“Great experience! They had so many different color options and gutter styles to choose from. You can't even tell our home has gutters unless you look closely. That's how well it matches to our house!”
“I was able to send them measurements, pick from a variety of colors. We went with the copper color. They came out same week and got them put up with in hours. The crew was timely and curious. The price was fair.”
From our South Austin base we work around the metro, including Hill Country areas such as Bee Cave, Dripping Springs and Rollingwood.

Common questions
Why does water shoot over the gutter on my metal roof?
Usually the panel edge runs too far past the gutter, or the gutter sits too low. Water leaves a smooth panel fast, so a long overhang can throw it past the front lip in a hard rain. We check the eave trim and gutter position at the estimate. The fix may be repositioning the gutter or a change at the eave.
Can you add gutters to an existing metal roof?
Usually, yes, if there is sound fascia to hang from. We measure the run, check the panel edge and eave trim, and plan downspouts for the long planes. If the fascia needs carpentry or the eave has to change, we confirm that scope on the written quote so nothing surprises you later.
Do gutters on a metal roof need a gutter apron?
Often, yes. A gutter apron or drip edge carries water from the roof edge into the trough, and the back of the gutter should sit behind it. Without one, water can run between gutter and fascia. Some roofers build this into the eave trim on metal jobs, so we look at what is already there before we recommend anything.
Are aluminum gutters OK with a coated steel metal roof?
Yes. The Metal Construction Association's bulletin treats aluminum parts as compatible with aluminum-zinc coated steel panels. Copper is the one to watch, because copper runoff harms those coatings. If you like the copper look, ask about a copper-color finish on aluminum. We use .027 aluminum as the minimum and offer .032 as the heavier option.
Will a metal roof need bigger gutters than shingles?
Not automatically. Square footage still sets the baseline, and many metal roofs do fine with 5-inch K-style and well-placed 3x4 downspouts. Long planes, steep pitches and valleys push the answer toward 6-inch. Add downspouts before you assume you need a larger gutter, and check placement under the panel edge first.
Can I put gutter guards on a metal roof gutter?
Sometimes. Guards that tuck under a shingle edge have nothing to tuck under on a metal panel, so the attachment has to suit the gutter and the eave. We will look at the panel edge before we quote one. Fast runoff also needs a guard that lets water drop through instead of skating across it.
