A sag is rarely one failure. When a hanger lets go, that spot drops and holds water and debris. The added weight loads the hangers on either side, and the sag spreads. Fix it early and you may only need a short stretch rehung. Leave it and you can end up with a kinked gutter, a stained fascia, or a section on the ground.
Signs of a gutter pulling away
- A wavy line along the front edge when you sight down the run from a corner
- A visible gap between the back of the gutter and the fascia
- Spikes backing out, or hangers hanging loose in the channel
- Standing water in one spot a day or two after rain
- Water spilling over the lip at the same place every storm
- Stains or peeling paint on the board behind the gutter
- A downspout pulled out of line at the top

What a rehang includes
A rehang covers the run from end to end, because a sag is a slope problem as much as a hanger problem. We look at how the gutter is fastened, whether the board behind it can hold a fastener, and where the water goes once the line is corrected. Short dips sometimes need only a few new hangers. Long runs that have lost their fall come down and go back up on a corrected line. Tell us about beds, slopes or a pool under the run, since the ladder needs firm ground.
- Hanger swap. Loose spikes and failed hangers come out and new ones go in.
- Added support. Extra hangers where the span between fasteners has grown too long.
- Slope reset. The line is set toward the outlet and checked along its length.
- Joint check. Corners and end caps get a look, since a dropped run can open them.
- Downspout alignment. The top of the downspout goes back in line with the outlet.
What makes gutters loose on Austin homes?
Three things loosen most gutters: the fastener, the wood and the weight.
The fastener. Spike-and-ferrule hanging is common on older gutters. A spike is a smooth nail with no threads to resist pull-out, so it can work loose as the gutter moves through hot and cold seasons. Refitting a spike in its old hole seldom holds for long.
The wood. A screw holds only as well as the board it enters. When water reaches the fascia for years, the wood softens and fasteners lose their grip. That is why fascia and soffit repair often comes before a rehang.
The weight. Oak leaves and tassels hold water like a sponge. The City of Austin has recorded rain bursts above 5 inches in several hours, and a clogged run can fill faster than its outlet can drain. Wet debris and deep water then hang off the same few fasteners. Too few downspouts make this worse. We work to about one downspout per 30 feet of gutter, rather than the common 40-foot spacing, so water leaves the run sooner.

Gutter hanger replacement or a full rehang?
The right repair depends on how far the sag has traveled and what the board looks like. Here is how the options compare.
| Method | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Add or replace hangers | A short stretch with solid fascia and good slope elsewhere | Quick, but it does not correct slope along the rest of the run |
| Rehang the run | Lost slope or low spots over a long stretch | More labor; the gutter comes off and goes back on a corrected line |
| Fascia repair, then rehang | Soft wood where fasteners will not hold | Adds carpentry, confirmed on the estimate |
| Replace the length | Kinked, torn or very thin stock | New metal formed on site; color has to be matched |
Screw-in hidden hangers generally hold better than spikes, since the threads resist pull-out and the bracket also braces the front lip. Spacing depends on the hanger, the gauge and the gutter size. Heavier .032 inch aluminum resists bending better than the .027 inch standard, and thin .025 or .019 inch stock that has already kinked may not be worth saving.
Why does the slope matter so much?
Gutters do not work on level. Our working standard is a fall of about 1/4 to 1/2 inch per 10 feet along the entire length, toward the outlet. A run can look straight from the yard and still hold water, and a low spot of even a small depth collects grit, leaves and wet weight. That is how the next sag starts.
So a gutter slope fix means checking the whole run, not only the part that dropped. Standing water after a rain is the honest test. If water still sits in the channel, the line is not right yet.
A common trade method is to snap a line along the fascia at the target fall, then set each hanger to that line.

How we rehang gutters, step by step
- Inspect. At the free estimate we sight the line, check hangers and press on the fascia behind the loose stretch.
- Quote. You get a written line-item quote covering hangers, linear feet to be rehung, any new metal and any board work we have confirmed. Approve when you are ready. There is no sales pressure.
- Take down what needs it. Loose lengths come off, and old fasteners are removed.
- Sort out the board. Any confirmed fascia work comes before the gutter goes back.
- Rehang at the correct slope. Hangers go into solid wood and the line is set toward the outlet.
- Walk it. After cleanup we check the run with you and confirm the downspout discharge.

What changes the price of sagging gutter repair?
Yours will come as a written quote after a free estimate. For outside context, Angi's national gutter repair guide (2025 data) puts simple repairs such as fixing supports at $2 to $7 per linear foot, and Angi lists Austin gutter labor at about $75 per hour. Those figures are not ours.
- How many linear feet need rehanging
- Whether the fascia is solid along that stretch
- Height, roof pitch and ladder access
- Whether kinked metal must be replaced and color-matched
- Whether more downspouts would take load off the run
Old spike-hung runs usually take more labor than a short hanger swap, since every fastener along the wall may need to change. Oak-heavy Austin lots add a step, because a channel packed with wet debris has to be emptied before anyone lifts it. A run above a slope, a pool or a planted bed takes more ladder setup. If a quote adds a downspout to cut the load, that should be its own line. Compare bids by linear feet rehung and hanger count, not the total alone.
Who regulates a gutter rehang?
Austin's list of work exempt from building permits names exterior trim repairs, including wood fascia and soffits, which matters when a rehang turns into board work. Gutters themselves are not named, so Development Services is the place to confirm anything unusual. Exempt or not, the work still has to meet code. The City's contractor registration covers jobs done under a building or trade permit. At the state level, Texas does not license roofing contractors and no gutter license was found, so checking insurance and references falls to the homeowner. Outside Austin city limits, your city and HOA make their own calls.
Why V&V for loose gutters
Peter K. wrote that we met him on a Monday and did a repair and install the next day, which shows what can happen when the schedule allows. Venkat V. called Omar polite and patient about explaining the work, and meticulous about doing it. A slope fix needs that habit, because someone has to check the whole line and tell you what he found.
- Installers doing the repair. Hanging at the correct slope is a set step in our install process.
- We can replace as well as rehang. A kinked length can be roll-formed on site.
- Patient explanations. Reviewers describe Omar explaining the work and being meticulous about it.
- A clean finish. Cleanup comes before the walkthrough.
“V&V was great to work with. I met with them on a Monday to discuss my project. They came the next day and did a perfect repair and install on my gutters.”
“Victor and Omar were very professional and have done a great job for my house gutter installation.. Omar was polite and patient explaining the work and have done a meticulous job .. will definitely recommend !!”
“Omar and his coworker replaced all our old gutters, hauled off the old gutters and said to call if we had any issues at all. Very polite and efficient.”
From our South Austin base we rehang gutters across the region, including Round Rock, Leander and West Lake Hills, where tall oaks over the eaves make loaded gutters a regular concern.
Prevention is mostly housekeeping. Keep the channel clear with regular gutter cleaning, never lean a ladder on the gutter itself, and take a look along the line each spring and fall. A small dip caught early is a short repair. If the run has reached the end of its life, gutter replacement may cost less than chasing sags.

Common questions
Why is my gutter pulling away from the house?
Usually the fasteners have backed out, the fascia has softened, or the gutter has been carrying too much weight. Often it is a mix of all three. Wet debris and deep water add load, and soft wood gives fasteners little to bite. At the estimate we check the board first, because rehanging onto rotten wood will fail again.
Can I just hammer the spikes back in?
Yes, but it rarely lasts. A spike has no threads, and hammering it back into its old hole leaves it with even less to grip. It also does nothing about slope or soft wood. As a temporary step it may keep a gutter in place until a repair. For a lasting fix, the run needs fasteners set into solid wood.
How many hangers does a gutter need?
There is no single number for every house. Spacing depends on the hanger type, the gauge of the aluminum and the gutter size, and heavy debris areas benefit from closer hangers. A loose run often needs more support than it was built with. We count what is there at the estimate, and the written quote shows what we plan to add.
Does a sagging gutter mean my fascia is rotten?
No, not always, but check. Press on the board behind the sag with a screwdriver handle, or look for stains, peeling paint and soft edges. Some sags come from fasteners alone, with sound wood behind them. If the wood is soft, we confirm repair scope on the estimate, so the gutter does not go back onto a board that cannot hold it.
Is a loose gutter dangerous?
Yes, it can be. A full run of gutter is heavier than it looks, especially loaded with wet leaves. Keep people and cars clear of a section hanging by one end, and do not climb up to wrestle it in a storm. If it has come down or is about to, see our emergency gutter service page and call us.
How do I check my gutter slope?
Look for standing water a day or two after rain, or run a hose at the far end of the run and watch how the water moves. It should head steadily to the downspout with no puddles left behind. Any pool means a low spot. Do this from a stable ladder on firm ground, or tell us what you see and we will check it.
Can a sagging gutter be fixed without taking it down?
Yes, when the dip is short and the board behind it is sound. New hangers can lift that stretch back to line while the gutter stays up. Once a long run has lost its fall, it has to come down and go back on a corrected line. We sight the run at the estimate, so the quote says which one you need.
