If your gutter overflows in one spot while the trough looks clean, suspect the downspout before anything else. One blocked outlet can back water up the whole run, and a 2x3 downspout has only 6 square inches of opening to work with. A handful of wet leaves is enough to close that off.
Signs of a clogged downspout
Check these during or just after rain, from the ground.
- Overflow at or near one downspout, while the rest of the gutter behaves
- Little or no water at the bottom during steady rain
- Water leaking from an elbow joint or a seam partway down
- Water still sitting in the gutter hours after the rain ends
- A dull sound when you tap the pipe, compared with the hollow sound of an empty one
- A wet patch or washed-out soil near the bottom of the downspout
- A pop-up emitter or yard outlet that stays dry when it should be running

What gets cleared and checked
We treat a downspout as one path from the gutter outlet to the ground, not a single pipe. We follow the order the water travels, so the top outlet comes first and the yard end comes last. Clearing the plug is half the work. The other half is finding out why it formed, because a tube that clogs twice a year may need a bigger outlet, another downspout or a guard. If joints come apart, they go back together and get sealed. A section too crushed to clear gets replaced as quoted. Anything that turns into a repair goes on the quote first.
- Top outlet. Debris cleared from the gutter opening.
- Elbows and joints. Opened if packed, then reassembled and sealed.
- Straight drop. Flow tested from the top with running water.
- Extensions. Checked for crushed sections and where the water lands.
- Buried lines. Looked at, with scope confirmed on the estimate.
Why do Austin downspouts clog?
- Oak tassels and leaves. Live oaks shed old leaves and tassels in spring, according to Texas A&M's Plant Clinic. Tassels mat together and sit at the outlet.
- Elbows. Debris slows at each bend, so the top elbow is the usual plug.
- Shingle grit. It settles into sediment, and it packs hard in a low-flow pipe.
- Nests. Birds and wasps use dry downspouts, and our long dry stretch in July gives them time.
- Crushed pipe. A mower, a trailer or foot traffic can flatten an extension.
- Silted buried lines. Sediment settles in the low spots of underground pipe.
- Undersized drainage. A 2x3 handles about 600 square feet of roof. Ask more of it and it can back up with nothing stuck inside.
How we find a downspout blockage
We work from the top of the system to the bottom, because that is the way the water goes. First we check the trough and the outlet. Then we run water in from the gutter and watch how it comes out. If it backs up, we find the level where it stops. If the pipe flows but the yard outlet does not, the problem is below ground. That test also tells us whether the issue is a clog at all, or a sizing or slope problem that a cleaning would not cure.

Clearing options and their trade-offs
| Method | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Clear the outlet by hand | A plug right at the top | Quick, but does nothing lower down |
| Flush with a hose from the top | Loose debris in a straight drop | Can pack a tight plug tighter |
| Take the elbows apart | Packed bends | Slower, and joints must be reassembled and sealed |
| Run a drain snake | A plug deep in a long pipe | Can scratch thin metal, and works blind |
| Replace a crushed section | Flattened pipe or extension | It is a repair, so it goes on the quote |
| Flush an underground drain | Silt in a buried line | Only works if the line is intact. Scope confirmed on the estimate. |
Buried lines take a separate conversation. Underground drain flushes depend on where the line goes, whether it has an open outlet and whether roots or a break are the cause. Tell us what you know about the line and we will confirm what we can take on when we see it. If the pipe has collapsed, that is a digging job, not a cleaning job.

The downspout unclogging visit, step by step
- Tell us which corner overflows and what you have tried.
- We walk the gutter and each downspout, including any extensions.
- You get a written quote before work starts, listing what will be cleared or replaced.
- We clear the blockage with the lightest method that works.
- We run water through and watch it leave at the discharge point.
- We show you the result and note anything to watch.
Most of the time you will know it worked before we leave, because the flush test shows it. The real check comes at the next good rain. Go out and look. Water should move through the downspout steadily and leave the extension without pooling. If that one spot still overflows, call us back so we can look at sizing or slope.
What affects the cost to clear a downspout?
A written quote after a free estimate is how you get the real number. For a third-party reference, Angi's 2026 Austin gutter cleaning guide lists downspout cleaning as an add-on at about $50 to $100. Treat that as a guide, and expect these things to push a job either way.
- How many downspouts are blocked
- Height of the run, and how many elbows it has
- Whether joints have to be taken apart and resealed
- Whether a section or extension needs replacing
- Whether a buried line is part of the job
On Austin homes the ground end changes the job most. A plug in the top elbow comes out quickly, while a silted yard line or a flattened extension takes more time. A run with a PVC tie-in or a rain barrel connection takes extra care to put back. Sometimes a bigger outlet or an added downspout is the better buy, so ask for that priced beside the clearing. A quote that lists each downspout by location is the easiest one to compare.
Rules for buried lines and discharge
Two state rules matter once a downspout job reaches the yard. The Railroad Commission of Texas says homeowners must contact 811 two business days before digging, even in their own yard. Texas Water Code section 11.086 addresses surface water diverted so that it damages another property by overflow, so watch where an extension lands near a fence line. On expansive soils, 2021 International Residential Code section R801.3 and USDA NRCS guidance both set 5 feet of discharge. No state gutter license was found, so ask any company for insurance proof and references. Cities and HOAs may add their own rules.
How do you keep a downspout from clogging again?
- Upsize it. A 3x4 has twice the opening of a 2x3, at 12 square inches, and it passes leaves more easily. 5-inch K-style gutters can take either size.
- Add one. We plan on about one downspout per 30 feet of gutter, rather than the common 40-foot spacing. See downspout installation.
- Stop debris at the top. Micro-mesh guards keep most leaves out of the outlet, though they do not end cleaning.
- Extend the discharge. NRCS guidance calls for at least 5 feet of extension on expansive soils. We aim for 6 to 10 feet.
- Stay on schedule. Regular gutter cleaning catches debris before it reaches the elbow.

Why call V&V for a stubborn downspout
We size and hang these parts for a living, so a blocked line gets read as a drainage problem and not only a plug. Gijo A. mentions a very neat job on gutters and downspouts. Ryan D. wrote that we installed a new downspout and moved other gutters over to his rain barrels. If the real fix is a bigger outlet, we will say so.
Downspouts are also where the unusual stuff happens at a house. We have added spouts, tied in an AC drain line and redirected gutters to rain barrels on past jobs, as you can read below. If your downspout has a PVC tie-in or feeds a barrel, tell us so we check that connection too. These reviews are from install work, and they show the kind of drainage problems we deal with.
“Victor and his team did a great job on my gutter project. They came by the same day for a quote, provided the work the next day, completing the job on time and on schedule. Installed a new gutter, new downspout, and redirected a couple other gutters over to my rain barrels.”
“Added functional gutter spout while integrating AC drain pvc within spout giving it a great look from house and adding another functional gutter. Very professional and quick service!”
“Victor was very quick in responses and very reasonable in pricing on installing gutters and down sprouts to my home. They gave an appointment without much delay and did a very neat job.”
We work from South Austin and reach homes across the metro. Pflugerville and Manor are about 30 and 25 minutes in normal traffic, and Hutto is about 35. Other service areas are listed here.

Common questions
How do I tell a clogged downspout from a gutter that is too small?
Check whether it overflows in one spot or everywhere. Overflow at one point near the downspout suggests a clog. Overflow along the whole run in hard rain, with clear pipes, suggests too little drainage. Add downspouts before assuming the gutter is too small, since that fix usually costs far less than a new run.
Can I unclog a downspout myself?
Yes, you can try on a single-story house. Clear the outlet from a stable ladder, then run a garden hose down from the top. If the water backs up, stop before you pack the plug tighter. Taking the bottom elbow off from the ground is often safer than working at the top. Two-story runs are worth hiring out.
Do you flush underground drain lines?
Sometimes. We will look at it and confirm the scope on the estimate. It depends on where the line runs, whether it has an open outlet, and what is blocking it. Silt can flush out. Roots or a crushed pipe usually cannot. Tell us what you know about the line when you call, including who installed it.
Why does my downspout overflow only in hard rain?
It may be partly blocked, or it may be too small for the roof area. A pipe that passes a light rain can still back up in a downpour, and Austin has recorded bursts of more than 5 inches in several hours. A flush test separates the two causes. If it is clear, sizing is the next thing to check.
What is that gurgling or dripping from my downspout joint?
Dripping at a joint usually means water is backing up behind a clog, or a seal has failed at the elbow. Water should run down inside the pipe without escaping. Clear the blockage first, because a seal repair will not hold against a backed-up pipe. If it still drips after a flush, we reseal or replace that section.
Should a downspout drain into a French drain or a buried pipe?
Yes, it can, but it has to be kept clear, and an above-ground extension is easier to inspect. A buried line hides a clog until the water backs up at the house. If you already have one, check that its outlet is open and flows in rain. If you are adding drainage, we will talk through the options on the estimate.
